Woman of the Year 2012

NANCY ELIZABETH SPIEKHOUT

I have been married 31 years to my loving husband, Bryon.  We have two children who are the love of our lives.  Andrea is 23 years old and is in a medical program at Lake Erie College of Medicine.  Christopher is 20 years old and finishing his Law Enforcement Degree at SC4 and has been accepted at Northern Michigan University in the Wild Life and Fisheries Management Program and will start in the fall.

I became a member at St. Martin's in November 1993, when the children were very young.  I have taught Sunday school, moving up as they did, participated and chaired the Parish Education Committee for many years.  I've held various other positions on Church Council such as Executive Council Secretary, Financial Secretary, and Memorial Committee Chairman, of which I am currently doing.  I also sing in the choir and am an assisting minister.

Bryon and I currently support the Down-river Bread of Life Nutrition Center by creating the weekly menus and shopping for the ingredients for the meals served.  I have assisted at various humanities events, as well as fundraisers for local causes.  I spent eight years helping the International Nutcracker Ballet in Port Huron as make-up coordinator.

I don't think there was one thing that inspired me to serve the Lord.  I think the Holy Spirit very quietly whispered to me what I should do and I just did it.  Where there was a need, such when I first came to St. Martin's, there was a need for a Sunday school teacher and I did it.  Maybe that is why my favorite song is "Here I Am Lord!"  I know that this journey isn't by myself, that with our Lord I can do what He wants.

Nancy and her family live in Marine City.  She is also a warm, and caring person.  A friend who is willing to share her time and faith with all that know her.  She also has a Saturday Bible study group.  she is blessed to be a blessing.  Congratulations Nancy!
